Wernicke Encephalopathy Claims

You should be able to trust the medical professionals treating you. When you have symptoms that are causing concern, a physician should be willing to get you the tests and treatment you need right away. Unfortunately, we have seen that many doctors and nurses do not take necessary action when they should, or may fail to perform treatment properly. This can lead to the onset of serious, irreversible medical conditions. One of these ailments is Wernicke encephalopathy, which can easily turn into Korsakoff syndrome if it is not treated quickly.

If you are suffering from this debilitating condition, talk with a San Antonio medical malpractice lawyer at Maloney Law Group, P.L.L.C, today. We provide specialized attention for even the most complex cases. You will always speak directly with an attorney about your case. Our firm has the knowledge, experience, and resources you need when battling large medical institutions.

What Is Wernicke Encephalopathy?

Wernicke encephalopathy is a disease that affects the function of your brain. It comes on suddenly and must be treated immediately.

Symptoms of Wernicke encephalopathy include:

  • Problems with balance and movement
  • Weakness in the limbs
  • Confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Heart conditions
  • Blood vessel problems
  • Fainting
  • Drowsiness
  • Low blood pressure
  • General malaise

Without proper care, Wernicke encephalopathy develops into Korsakoff syndrome. This “second stage” of the disease causes short-term memory loss. While Wernicke encephalopathy is often reversible, Korsakoff syndrome is not.

Causes of Wernicke Encephalopathy

The most common cause of this ailment is a lack of Vitamin B1, normally brought on by excessive alcohol consumption. However, it can also be a complication of cancer, AIDS, or a serious infection. In some cases, it is a side effect of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, Wernicke encephalopathy can also result from a poorly executed gastric bypass surgery.

Don’t suffer the devastating consequences of this illness alone. At Maloney Law Group P.L.L.C., we specialize in medical malpractice. The Maloney name has been a pillar in San Antonio for more than 60 years, and we have earned a reputation for relentless advocacy.
