Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Birth Injury Attorneys in San Antonio

Fighting for Your Family Fearlessly

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) refers to a lack of oxygen and blood at birth. Babies who suffer from HIE must be treated immediately. When there is a lack of oxygen to the brain and other organs, compounded with a lack of blood flow, the damage can be permanent or fatal. HIE is the leading cause of infant deaths in the United States.

If your baby was diagnosed with HIE, our San Antonio birth injury attorneys can help. The doctors or nurses who assisted with your delivery may be at fault for your baby’s condition. Our firm dedicates the time, resources, experience, and knowledge necessary to create a compelling case. We are not afraid to go to trial when necessary.

Call (210) 361-2997 and talk to our team at Maloney Law Group, P.L.LC. today.

The Effects of HIE

HIE can range from mild to severe. In many cases, babies with mild HIE recover in the hospital and are able to live normal lives. However, not all infants are as lucky.

HIE can lead to:

  • Epilepsy
  • Developmental problems
  • Cognitive issues
  • A lack of motor skills
  • Problems with neurodevelopment

In many cases, the effects of HIE are not evident until the baby reaches three or four years old.

What Causes HIE?

HIE can appear before a baby is born, during the birth, or postpartum. In some cases, medical intervention can lessen the risks of HIE. OBGYNs should be attentive to their patients and note any signs of placental dysfunction, preeclampsia, congenital infection, poor lung development, or fetal anemia.

During birth, doctors and nurses should monitor the mother’s blood pressure, be aware of the position of the umbilical cord, deal with any excess bleeding from the placenta, and minimize the risk of a placenta or uterine rupture. Sometimes, this may mean performing an emergency C-section.

Premature babies are at a higher risk of developing HIE. They may suffer from low blood pressure, infections, or brain malformations.

How We Can Help

There are treatments available for children with HIE. After birth, chances are that your baby will need to remain in the NICU on a ventilator, or may need medication to help regulate blood pressure. These expenses can add up. If a doctor or hospital staff directly caused your child’s HIE through inaction, misdiagnosis, or negligence, we will do what we can to secure the finances needed to see you through treatment.
