Man Claims Medication Errors Resulted in Kidney Failure

Because those who work in the medical care profession continue to learn more about what drugs to use to treat certain illnesses, many people in Texas are often able to live longer lives with a better quality of life. Unfortunately, if a person is prescribed the wrong medicine or given the wrong dosage, he or she could suffer serious harm. For example, one out-of-state man claims that medication errors caused his renal failure.

The man says that he was prescribed a drug to help treat his blood pressure. Although he picked up a prescription from Kroger, he said that he immediately began to experience symptoms that were out of the ordinary, such as fatigue, and was unable to manage his blood pressure. A lawsuit claims that instead of giving the man the labetalol that was prescribed, the pharmacy instead gave him lamotrigine, which is used to treat bipolar disorder and seizures.

The man was reportedly suffering from chronic kidney disease prior to taking the medications, but he and his wife argue that the drug exacerbated his condition. Now he says he requires dialysis everyday and needs a kidney transplant. The couple estimates current and future medical expenses at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

While some reports indicate that medication errors are rare, their implications are often severe, ultimately requiring additional medical interventions. Some people in Texas have even experienced the death of a loved one due to such mistakes. If negligence can be proved in these instances, victims could receive an award of damages to help them cope with the financial consequences of such acts.
