Medication errors resulted in brain damage

There is no doubt that everyone is capable of making mistakes. While a missed turn on the way to a new destination in Texas has relatively few repercussions, other mistakes can have extreme consequences.  For example, medication errors can have a serious impact on a person's life, as illustrated by the case of a man who is now suffering brain damage after a doctor administered the incorrect dosage of a medication commonly used to treat issues with a person's heart rhythm.

The damage occurred when a man was undergoing a procedure to replace a heart valve. After his heartbeat became irregular, the surgeon ordered that the drug amiodarone be administered. Unfortunately, the anesthesiologist mistakenly administered 2,700 milligrams of the drug instead of the requested 150.

The extreme dose was administered intravenously over the course of 30 minutes. The medication build up to toxic levels, and as a result, his brain was deprived of oxygen. Unfortunately, representatives for the man claim that he will require extensive medical assistance for the remainder of his life. A jury has recent awarded him $12.2 million as of a medical malpractice lawsuit.

The ramifications of medication errors are clear. Lives are often drastically changed as a result of administering the wrong drug, the wrong amount of a drug or failing to administer a drug. Many people suffering in such a manner in Texas may follow the same route as this case -- filing a medical malpractice lawsuit in a civil court. A successfully presented case could result in an award of damages that will allow victims to cope with the harm caused by a medical professional's negligence.
